It should be Linux web hosting because Windows sites are less popular, and offer you fewer software options.

It must have cPanel available. That costs your host money, so if it's not there you know that they are cost-cutting too much.

It must offer php web hosting (most hosts do nowadays). You don't need it as a beginner, but you will one day.

It must have a good support section - particularly if you are a beginner, and often need help.

They should offer addon domains (this is what they mean by extra domains or unlimited domains or number of domains covered or multiple websites)

Must have MySQL (Most have it).

They should have AwStats as a standard statistics program to tell you how well your site is doing.

They should give you at least 10GB of disk space, but you'll probably use less than 1GB as a beginner.

One thing that you should realize about hosts. They can't work miracles. All of them will give you nearly 100% time online, and you can be sure that the tiny percentage of time that they are down will be at the worst possible time for you! You'll just have to learn to put up with it. They can't work miracles. The host that I recommend charges too little for difficult problems. That's why it's ideal for beginners with only simple problems.

A good way to check on the support team of your hosting provider is to contact them beforehand with a question.
