Why do you want to create your own website? I've tried to make this website general enough to give you step by step instructions for any kind of website, but it's entirely up to you how you design your own website.

For instance, your kid has a digital camera, and takes surprisingly good pictures. You can put the pictures up on a website, and encourage the kid to write a short description of each picture. Writing for school is a bore, but it's fun for this sort of thing.

With younger children you might have to type what they are saying, but when they see their own words up on the screen, and can show all their friends, it's amazing how keen they will become to read and write and build a website.

If they are like me, they will want to show off, and teach their classmates and other friends how to make a website too. Teaching somebody else is the best way to learn anything.

When I first made my own website

That was back in the ancient days when html pages were a new idea, and version 2 still hadn't come out. I made a site about barbershop singing in Australia, and put up all the details for each chorus of when and where rehearsals were, and all the upcoming concerts. That was a free site, not intended to create income, so it didn't matter that it was free. Our own chorus got one new member out of it, which made it all worth it.

Of course, nobody would look at such a site nowadays, because the Internet has made such rapid progress.

Nowadays I would be looking for a way to make money even from such a site, and it would have its own domain name and a paid host.

Why are you thinking of website creation

Before you even start to create your website, make sure that you know what you want from your pages.

Even if you only want to show your holiday photos to your relatives on the other side of the world, you can sketch out on paper just how you want each page to look. You don't want co create your own website looking as if everything has just fallen in a heap.
